Cantonese street food made by a passionate Gweilo
Hi! Hello! Hey! :)
Welcome to Gweilo – Cantonese street food made by a passionate Scotsman you probably wouldn’t expect to find behind a wok. The name? It comes from Hong Kong, where “Gweilo” — meaning “White Ghost” or “White Devil” — was once a very cheeky nickname for pale, fiery-haired, strange-sounding foreigners. Sound familiar? That had to be a Scotsman!
Yes, you don’t normally find a Scot cooking up Cantonese favourites, but that’s exactly why we thought the name was perfect. Our main menu is packed with all the classics you’ll know and love from your local takeaway – only louder, bolder, crispier, saucier, and maybe the best version you’ve ever had. We like to keep things fresh too, with weekly specials that dive into authentic Hong Kong flavours and celebrate the festivals, culture, and food that first inspired us.
You’ll find us at Edinburgh Street Food, the city’s buzzing indoor (and outdoor) market just a hop from Waverley Station. It’s the kind of place that’s perfect for piling in with your pals, keeping the kids fuelled and happy, or kicking off a date night that’s anything but boring. With live music, craft drinks, a ton of food traders, and an atmosphere that makes “just popping in for a quick bite” turn into an entire evening, it’s the ultimate spot to eat, drink, and hang out. So swing by, grab a seat, and let us show you why Cantonese street food tastes even better with a Scottish twist.
